Leonardo da Vinci in the 16th century. The modern design of today's life ring is known as the Kisbee Ring, named after Lieutenant Thomas Kisbee of the Royal Navy. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) adopted the Kisbee Ring as standard equipment in 1855.
